Since the mid 1990’s I have been helping teachers plan for a life beyond teaching.
I was a teacher pension specialist with Prudential when it provided the in-house AVC scheme. I gave in-person talks at schools in the Hampshire and Sussex area, talking teachers through the main benefits of the Teachers Pension and what their retirement may look like.
Early retirement
One common theme I noticed was that many teachers planned (or wanted) to leave the profession years before the normal retirement age. So I decided to focus on helping people retire from teaching with confidence and peace of mind.
Over the years since, I have helped hundreds of teachers plan to exit before their “official” pension age. I supported them with how to fund ‘the Gap’ – and beyond. As a result, many clients have remained with me for over 25 years and are fully enjoying their retired life.
More than a parent
Personally, I have always had a greater connection with teachers other than just as a parent. I have been involved in running PTA’s and being Finance Governor. These experiences gave me a great insight into the life of teachers and to appreciate the frustration and pressure that comes with the job.
Equally, my wife Hazel has worked in various roles in schools, from PA to then Student Services Manager, until finally being able to get out. (She is always happy to tell you that her stress was certainly left behind at the school gates!)
“I just want to get out”
It’s no surprise that after nearly 30 years, the same pressures are there, and some may say greater because of what the job entails now. I still have weekly conversations with teachers that just want to get out.
The good news is that I know I can help. Helping so many teachers to have the confidence to leave teaching has led me to create a unique service dedicated to this profession.
I call it Life Beyond Teaching.
It’s just for teachers, focussing on the key aspects and strategies for exiting teaching, and how to plan a purposeful and fulfilling retirement to enjoy for the next 30+ years.
This may involve various options to consider including:
- Building a financial strategy to fund reducing hours now
- Finding a new calling or new career
- Being able to stop completely
Not just about finances
When it comes to retirement, finances are not everything. You may have the finances to retire, but are you really ready for a life beyond teaching?
A career in education has typically provided you with a purpose, routine and structure, social life, friendships and long (paid) summer holidays.
When you retire, this all changes. I am sure you have heard of teacher retiring and within a year or two are bored and have nothing to get up for. Or simply just drop-down dead too young!
My role as financial planner, retirement coach and mentor can help you prepare for this huge mid-life transition. So you can have a life to really look forward to beyond teaching.
Think I can help you?
